Marlow and the Monster is a very cute story about a boy named Marlow who is being bothered by a monster every night. When he calls his parents, they tell him monsters don't exist. Marlow gets very annoyed as the monster, who thinks he's scary, keeps getting him in trouble. Marlow decides to give the monster to his sister. His younger sister is the one who shows Marlow a different side of the monster, and Marlow and the monster become best friends.
We recently moved, and ever since, the kids have been afraid of monsters in their rooms. I love that this story turns the traditional "monster story" around, and the monster is just looking for a friend, while Marlow is not afraid.
The boys loved the story. I could almost see fear in their eyes when I started the story, and then the fear turned from curiosity to enjoyment by the end of the book. I think that showing them a different perspective of a monster, definitely eased their fears.
Sharon Cramer is the author and illustrator of the book. The illustrations are beautiful, they are made of quill pen and ink, and the only color is the monster to represent the fact that only the children can see him.
Marlow and the Monster is the 4th book by author Sharon Cramer. She is the author of The Cougar Cub Tales, as well as her first full length novel, The Execution, and is working on a young adult, fantasy series called The Cerulean Star.
